My daughter and I have been spending the start of the Tattie holidays having fun making little stop motion clips of our favourite tales that make good Hallowe'en/Samhain themed stories.
We’ve started with a stop motion video of the Witch of Laggan story. There’s various versions and variations of it elsewhere online and in a few books and this one is a much shortened 'highlight' version. I did an Instagram post of the tale previously which was set to a stop motion of our witch leaving milk out for the Cat Sith but decided to redo it. Having grown up in Laggan (I know I don't sound it) this is a very local tale for us to retell.
From our range of figures the video features our Storm Kelpie Scottish Wildcat and Kittens, Witch, Creel Lady and Kelpie. Other prototypes and handmade figures of ours along with playcloths and pieces bought from several other toy brands also feature.
We’re hoping to make some other spooky videos of Scottish tales in the lead up to Hallowe’en in a similar way.
This next clip is the Witch leaving out milk for the Cat Sith on Hallowe'en that we made last year. The Cat Sith being a type of large fairy cat which roams Scotland on its hind legs. It has a white mark on its chest in order to try and hide its dark true nature which might be suspected if it were a totally black cat. To ensure your home is not cursed or brought bad luck by this fairy cat it is advised to leave it out saucers of milk at Hallowe'en. In some versions it is said to be a witch who turned into a cat too many times and got stuck in this form, others that they try to steal the souls of the deceased between death and burial.
This clip (no sound) features our Storm Kelpie Witch, Cat Sith, Autumnal bushes and tree, Beast Head Pictish Stone and Pink Thistle and a prototype Blackhouse we made.
There's various other tales of Scottish fairy or magical cats that are very enjoyable tales and all make great spooky tales for Hallowe'en time or telling on other dark nights.
